Well, it is now 2018, and with the new year typically comes resolutions. I do not consider myself a typical new years resolution maker. When I think of a “typical” new years resolution, the things that come to mind are “getting rid of sugar in my diet” or “giving up soda for good” or “deleting my Facebook account”, or even “reading 100 books in a year”. To me, these are resolutions that are not realistic for various reasons. For one, I am not going to deprive my body of nutrients (yes, even sugar) if my body has been used to it for, well, my entire life. As I have said in a previous post, everything in moderation. So, completely eliminating something from my diet is just not something I am interested in doing, or will I ever-plus, I don’t feel it is sustainable. Quite honestly, while I am no doctor, or nutrition expert, for that matter, I am extremely confident that the people who eliminate those things from their bodies, then try to reintroduce them again later, as they so often do, are the ones that have the stronger propensity to develop an allergic reaction later. But maybe that is just how I rationalize continuing the diet I have.

Don’t get me wrong, I am careful about what I eat, and how much junk I put in my body. When I had gestational diabetes with my third child, for example, I grew very familiar with the importance of carbohydrate intake in moderation. But I will never completely quit eating bread, nor will I turn away from the occasional chocolate chip cookie. Do I drink regular soda anymore? No-to me, this is a waste of perfectly good carbohydrates I can get in a chocolate chip cookie. But I can get into my diet choices at a later date.

Getting back to the new year’s resolutions.

Deleting my Facebook account. Forget about it! I enjoy keeping in touch with people, and sometimes using my Facebook as a bragging page for my children. There are a lot of moms that do that. If you don’t like me doing it, scroll along, or hide me from your news feed-or delete me! Don’t get me wrong, I don’t just talk about my children-sometimes I talk about my running (surprising, I know), other times, my night out (though rare nowadays), but overall it’s a wonderful way for me to keep in touch with friends that don’t live near me, and my cousins, some of whom I haven’t seen in years. So essentially, that’s not going away, and I don’t think that’s a bad thing. As to reading 100 books in a year-I have a full time job, three children under the age of 10, two of which are involved in activities, and I happen to have a hobby that takes up about an hour of my day whenever I make the time for it (running), so when, exactly, would I sleep? Essentially, while I LOVE reading, I’ll have to lessen the pressure on myself and just read when I can-though perhaps this year I’ll try to maintain a written log of how many I manage to finish, which could be interesting.

Then there is the type of resolution I enjoy making.

This is the resolution to better myself in 2018. I feel like I did this last year. I made goals and stuck to them. I intend to do the same this year, but for 2018 I’d like to try to be a bit more organized in my goal making. One way I intend to do this is through using a planner at work, old-school style, using my pen and writing things down in it. To add to this, one of my dearest friends gave me a running planner “The Complete Runner’s Day-By-Day Log 2018 Calendar”, which I’m super excited about and fully intend to use to keep me on track. Something about just opening a book and looking at where I am at really inspires me.

In addition to this, I hope to improve my culinary skills in the kitchen, which shouldn’t be too hard considering I don’t do a whole lot in the kitchen as it is! My husband is the culinary expert since we have an awesome grill (Traeger) that has a smoking element and essentially makes all meat/fish taste delicious! With the recent extreme cold temperatures, however, we have been unable to use it. Last night for dinner I made lasagna, which turned out rather tasty. But tonight’s dinner was pretty delicious, if I do say so myself. Lucky for me, I got an Instant Pot for Christmas (see previous post), and today I used it for the first time! I made these beef enchiladas, and I overcame my feelings of intimidation towards my pressure cooker. I’m already meeting a goal and it’s only the first day of the year! 😉 Bonus: two of my three children loved the beef for the enchiladas! If you guessed my middle child as the one that didn’t like it, you would be correct. 🙂

Finally, I think I need to try to get to bed at a decent hour each night as part of my goal to better myself. A good night’s sleep can only be a good thing, right? For me, this essentially means getting to bed anytime before midnight. This is surprisingly more difficult than you would think, given I feel like I always have so much household things to get done after the children are in bed. I should remember that sometimes those things can sit because sleep is more important.
